Understanding bias is the first step to managing it. This course defines unconscious bias, describes how it affects all settings such as the workplace, community, and education settings, and more. Prepares learners to acknowledge bias and use knowledge to reduce the negative impacts of bias. | Define implicit and explicit bias. Describe the impact of unconscious bias in the work, healthcare, and education environments. Provide tools to assist learners to reduce the harmful effects of implicit and explicit biases. |
Microaggressions

Microaggressions are brief and commonplace daily or verbal, behavioral, and environmental indignities, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial, gender, sexual orientation, and religious slights and insults to the target person or group. This course prepares learners to explore the causes of microaggressions and identify strategies to irradiate them. | Define microaggressions and the impact they have on others. Describe the connection to reinforcing inequity and prejudice in various environments. Using scenarios participants will be able to identify microaggressions and strategies for mitigating microaggressions in the individual, organization, social media, school work, and community settings. |

Achieving Health Equity requires developing a shared language that allows people to understand diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. There are twelve foundational terms: Health Equity, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, Implicit Bias, Microaggressions, Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Cultural Humility, and Cultural Responsiveness. The Center for Disease Control states that “Health equity is achieved when every person has the opportunity to attain his or her full health potential and no one is disadvantaged from achieving this potential because of social position or other socially determined circumstances.” The pandemic increased awareness that there is much work to be done. A growing, body of knowledge reveals the complexity of health equity, which includes social determinants of health. The World Health Organization defines social determinants of health to include social, physical, and economic conditions that impact health. | Define Health Equity.
